York Tech Faculty Encourages Students to Carry
on Legacy of MLK
ROCK HILL, SC —
To commemorate the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., York
Technical College’s esteemed faculty member, Ivan Lowe, had the
opportunity to deliver a keynote address at Winthrop University’s
annual MLK day of service yesterday.
The event, which kicked
off at 9 a.m. in Winthrop’s Richardson Ballroom, opened with warm
remarks from Winthrop President Jayne Marie Comstock. Lowe, who chairs
York Tech’s Business Administration Department, continued the
celebration with words of wisdom about the importance of leading lives
that contribute to Dr. King's dream. By highlighting monthly
principles that people should hold themselves to, he emphasized
concepts such as leadership, equality, community and perseverance.
Following the kick off, students took to their “challenge
packets,” which guided their service efforts for the day. Over 250
students from Winthrop, York Tech and Clinton College rolled up their
sleeves to help more than 25 community organizations.
picking up trash and debris at Anne Springs Close Greenway and Cherry
Road, to mulching the Rock Hill Community Garden and helping collect
and sort food donations at Pilgrims Inn, all participants took pride
in turning their day off into a “day on”.
“I don't ever want
people to forget the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I was
touched by the enthusiasm that was demonstrated by the students and it
was truly an honor to have the opportunity to serve as the keynote
speaker. I definitely plan to recruit more York Tech students to
attend next year,” Lowe said.
