Lancaster Works, York Tech Partnership Creates 115 Scholarship Opportunities for New Manufacturing Training Program

ROCK HILL, SC   Lancaster Works, an initiative of the Carolinas Literacy Network, in conjunction with York Technical College is striving to enhance workforce development with the start of a new six week manufacturing training program. With this new partnership, York Tech is in receipt of scholarships to train up to 115 area candidates.

Led by York Tech’s Corporate and Continuing Education Program Manager George Russell, this 200-hour training program demonstrates the State’s and College’s continued investment in the region’s workforce and economic development efforts, specifically in the manufacturing space. These advanced manufacturing and industrial trade programs are focused on preparing students for careers in the highly automated and technical manufacturing environments of the 21st Century.

“We’re excited about the impact the South Carolina Manufacturing Certification (SCMC) will have on putting people back to work. A highly trained, educated and skilled workforce will continue to keep York, Chester and Lancaster Counties competitive in attracting high-paying STEM jobs and employers to our service area,” Russell said.

Those who complete the program will receive a Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC) Certification, which sets the tone for a curriculum that provides industry-led training and assessment focused on the core skills and knowledge needed by the nation’s front-line production and material handling workers. Students will also receive a South Carolina Manufacturing Certification.

York Tech will host the first class for Advanced Manufacturing beginning on February 17, 2014 from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Lancaster Works offices, located at 105 W. Dunlap Street in Lancaster. York Tech has indicated that it will also hold classes on Main Campus in Rock Hill. Based on the response from the community, the college will consider offering this training in the evenings and/or on Saturdays. Information about future class locations will be disseminated to those who are accepted into the program.
