York Tech's Sturgis Receives Desire2Excel Award for Innovation
July 29, 2010
CHICAGO—Laura Sturgis, York Technical College’s Associate Dean for College Transfer, Articulation, and Special Projects, was recently named the co-winner of the Desire2Excel Award for Innovation. The announcement was made at the FUSION conference, the annual Desire2Learn (D2L) users conference, held this year in Chicago.
The international award is given each year for innovative use of the D2L learning environment. Sturgis won the award for her “advising course,” which enables the advisors of college transfer students to use their time with the students in a comprehensive way—well beyond the registration process.
Working in collaboration with the college’s Information Technology and Distance Learning departments, Sturgis created an advising course for each academic advisor.
In tune with
today's tech-savvy students, the advising course allows advisees to review academic progress, plan for upcoming semesters, and research available options 24/7.
The advising course is now being used by more than 30 college transfer advisors to communicate accurate, up to date, and pertinent information to York Tech’s 1,300 plus AA/AS students.
The course empowers students to become active and collaborative participants in their own educational journey.
