Read Aloud and Make a Difference

ROCK HILLDuring the month of October, York Technical College’s Child Development Center Director, John Hayes, is challenging and encouraging the York Tech community to get involved with the Read Aloud 15 Minutes Campaign. Research shows that only 48% of young children in the United States are read to each day; therefore, the Read Aloud 15 Minute Campaign encourages everyone to make a difference by simply reading aloud to children.

Hayes will open his preschool classroom each Tuesday and Thursday this month to York Technical College volunteers who have committed 15 minutes of their time to read their favorite childhood book to Hayes’ class.

Shannon Godwin, York Technical College instructor, participated in this year’s Real Aloud 15 Minute campaign and “completely enjoyed being immersed in 4-year old energy”.

According to the Read Aloud campaign, research has shown that reading aloud to a child is the single most important thing you can do to prepare a child for reading and learning. Reading to a child has proven to improve their language development and literacy skills, and encourages children to gain and share their knowledge.
