AdvanceSC Grant Will Bring "Next Generation" Robotics to York Tech
ROCK HILL—York Technical College has received a grant from AdvanceSC that will be used to upgrade the robotics technology of its Industrial Maintenance Technology program. Among other things, the $100,000 grant will be used to purchase a Delta (Spider) robot with IR vision and other equipment upgrades.
The project is part of the college’s continuing efforts to equip its students with “next generation” manufacturing skills and to meet the workforce demands of forward-leaning automated manufacturing companies and related industries in York, Chester, and Lancaster counties.
The college’s Industrial Maintenance program, which includes a state-of-the-art lab with 5- and 7-axis articulated robots, will be enhanced by the addition of the 6-axis robot. The grant will also cover the cost of instructor certification associated with the new equipment, allowing York Tech to certify its students in the use of the technology, further enhancing their marketability.
The new robot will also be available to the college’s Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology programs, giving students in these programs the opportunity to apply their engineering and design training on actual robots and automated manufacturing equipment.
The AdvanceSC grant will also fund the development of a Summer Externship in Industry program. Through this program, which will launch in the summer of 2012, select faculty will spend a week on the job with industry partners, learning the newest technologies and gaining a deeper understanding of real-world processes—valuable experience they can then bring back to their classrooms.
